Gary Marks, Chair in Multilevel Governance, Free University of Amsterdam and UNC-CH Burton Craige Distinguished Professor of Political Science. Marks is best known for developing the concept of multilevel governance in relation to the European Union. He was the founding Director of the Center for European Studies and the European Union Center for Excellence at UNC-CH, which he led from 1994 to 2006. Over the past few years he has worked on a variety of projects dealing with European political parties, regional authority, and Europe and its empires.
